As time marches by, from boom to bust, Chinese medicine thrives again along with the new wave of way back into nature. Reacting to the tendency, instead of the past perspective of medical theories, present reality, and future prospects, the designers intention is based on modern consumption awareness and the relation of human behavior and environment. Gathering various Oriental elements such as herbal storing cabinet and scrolls, the designer creates an atmosphere of Eastern philosophy in tranquility and calmness and Eastern aesthetic to promote the heritage and advancement of Chinese medical culture.
Oriental Design, Chinese Medical Science, Fusion of Chinese and Western Architectural Styles, multiple integrational design
Materials included stone, lacquered glass, metal, steel-brushed wood veneer, and jade floor. The designer outlines the space by simple lines with pure color levels, which present the consistency. The designer uses stone, metal, and jade floor to enrich layering, creating visual variation. Besides, on the both sides stand wooden interior facades of both light and dark shades and they are dotted with delicate ink patterns and metal, depicting a poetic and picturesque Eastern world under the light.
The height of the space is 2.07 meters in total, the height from floor to girder is 2.02. There are many problems with the low ceiling, and the beam runs through the long and narrow house, which leads to a sense of oppression. The designer keeps the front and the back open and permeable by adopting wholly open form. Applying gratings repeatedly along with stretching smooth curves from the ceiling to the floor, the designer presents users a vivid visual flow and remedy the harmony between the space and the girder.
The project was completed in 2018 in Taipei City, Taiwan.
With the image of scroll, the dark wooden walls build up the depth of field at one go, meanwhile, they hide the doors to other spaces from view. Vertically, the space creates continuous visual flow through soft curves. As for the ceiling decoration and the display area, applying abstraction technique meaning imitating shape and charm, they are conversed into compartmental cabinet for storing Chinese herbs, deepening the spirit of Eastern medical science.
The space is expected to serve members, to provide a place for cross-strait exchange and education, and to house files. It contains the meaning of both generation and heritage, mixing traditional oriental elements and contemporary features with ingenious aesthetics. In only 132 square meters, it realizes multiple goals in style and function, and also remodels the new values of Eastern medical science.
The designer blends in a great amount of wooden materials to make the space closer to the nature. At the same time, the needs, including reception, training, cross-strait exchanging, displaying, and storing, are met by multiple integrational design, providing the members a space with sound functions, by which it responds to the original goal on based on man.
