Vegetarian Restaurant for YesDesign Studio
The Mays, as a borderless creative vegetarian restaurant, launches cross-border innovation by bringing together food cultures from around the world. The Mays breaks the conventional ideas of people with food, so in this space, the designer wanted to break the rules as well. There is a legend that eating vegetarian food will make the human body grow backwards, so the designer designed an "inversed time and space". The metaphorical elements of the earth are inverted on the entire roof, and the magnificence of the earth is extended infinitely by mirroring.

The YESDESIGN team has broken the conventional design techniques of traditional vegetarian spaces. They avail themselves of the materials of terrazzo, stainless steel and copper chains, adopt bold design technique to integrate the design concept of "inversed time and space" into the whole space design, in a bid to create a unique and comfortable dining space.
Vegetarian, Restaurant, Nordic, Modernist, Terrazzo
The YesDesign project team pays high attention to innovation in materials and structures. The gray black terrazzo facade with blue crystal and pearl particles readily catch the eyes of people. The reception area of metal background is presented in a specially designed arc shape, like a time tunnel, directing consumers to the dining area. Grey terrazzo and metal are organically integrated in vision, well coordinated without losing the sense of details. The abundant light shines through large glass windows into the interior space, while showing a glimpse of the internal layers of space.
In the past, old fashioned vegetarian restaurants were usually associated with the "Buddhist rituals", mostly in the religious realm, but how to combine the brand attitude of a natural space, while subverting people's perceptions and maintaining a sense of space without losing details, was the challenge of this design.
The project started in November 2018 in Wuhan and finished in February 2019 in Wuhan.
The interior space is fully covered with the gray black terrazzo veneers, extending from the ground to the counter and tabletop. The ceiling reinterprets the natural earth. With carefully arranged copper chains, it transforms rolling hills into a scenery with ultimate beautiful visual effects. The ground lines are carefully arranged with metal edges to define the functions of different spaces. The Nordic decorations are visible everywhere, on intimate terms with people.
A custom version of terrazzo was chosen for this project. The designer searched almost every available flooring material and traveled to the material markets in 2 cities, Wuhan and Guangzhou, and finally found an inkstone manufacturer in Wuhan who was willing to customize the terrazzo for this design. Since most regular terrazzo is gray cement with black and white stones, and we needed to use blue crystal particles and pearl particles, every single particle in the terrazzo that ended up being used in this project was chosen by the designer himself.
Vegetarianism is a very healthy lifestyle in modern society, and in Guangdong there are folk customs of vegetarianism on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar, and there are even legends that eating vegetarian food all year round will reverse your growth, which is more useful than using cosmetics. So, the designer thought of creating a space that "inversed time and space", together with the dishes, to make a concept space that breaks the rules.
