As a unique skill in ancient China, lacquer art has a strong classical temperament in both style and material. We were tasked to design an International brand hotel with specific standard and guildlines. How to combine the classical techniques and modern styles in perfect harmony to create an innovation in design aesthetics has become our first revolution to conquer. Furthermore, due to the diversity of functions within a hotel building, interior designers in the hospitality field need to coordinate with various technical stakeholders including Architects, Structural, Engineers, MEP Engineers, Contractors and manufacturers to ensure all physical features and architectural elements are aligned with the client's vision, business requirements and operation standards.
The project starts design in December and finishes in November 2020, locates in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China
The whole project is strategically planned and well-thought out. The most efficient planning configurations design solutions were given by the designer to make use of each corner to create more interesting spatial sequence, to keep a minimum amount of circulation and service space. The perception theory was applied to enhance the humanization level of the hotel and get the customers' affirmation.
The aesthetic concept of "Blowing Wind and Flowing Water" pays homage to Fuzhou's origins as the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road. The region's historical and cultural influences are seen in the design elements, including its indigenous lacquer art, oil paper umbrellas and tea traditions. In the hotel lobby, 16 stunning lacquer screens soar sail-like into the high ceiling. We adopted the shape of ocean waves and sails in Marine culture, and used lacquer art screens with natural colors such as black, gold and orange on the overall tone to highlight the natural geographical features of the local mountains, forests, oceans, blowing wind and floating water at first glance so the guest can immediately be taken on a journey of understanding the local Fujian culture and characteristics.
The hotel design inherits the Fujian culture and Oriental aesthetics. The design of the hotel is inspired by the "Blowing Wind and Floating Water" which highlights the Marine culture of Fuzhou as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. The region's historical and cultural influences are seen in the design elements, including its indigenous lacquer art, oil paper umbrellas and tea traditions.
