Unique Properties

This home is a traditional and modern hybrid, traditional outside with a modern style inside. The foyer staircase is a principal feature, with a French Roast iron rail, with hardwood treads and tiled risers, making it grand. The Studio chose hardwood doors throughout, starting with a 10ft front glass and cedar door. This design translates through the home. A most significant element is a 30ft white quartzite wall, with 15ft wood grained aluminium window, flooding an intimate sitting area with natural light. The Studio chose a large format, neutral tile for all the main living spaces.

Production Technology

HomeWork Design Studio really enjoyed working with the clients and especially working with the space. The house begins to tell a story as you enter, and they loved that modern and traditional elements were matched to bring a real warmth and homey feeling to a large space. The Studio was pleased with all the final details, from the stonework, to the hardwood finished staircase, to the colour palette, to the lighting choices.

Design Challenge

The residential neighbourhood is prone to flooding, so HomeWork Design Studio incorporated raising the foundation of the home in the renovation to avoid potential future water damage. Finishing the home during the Covid pandemic presented many logistical challenges, especially regarding receiving finishing products, but planning and negotiating with freight-forwarders helped solved these issues in a timely manner.

Project Duration

This project broke ground in June 2019 in a north-west suburb of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Project completed in September 2020. Design and planning process took about 5 months prior to mobilization of ground works.

Operation Flow

The owners of this residence are very happy with their new home. In addition to living, they also operate their business from their home, and particularly enjoy the smart features, such as programmable appliances, window coverings, remote access home alarm and security cameras.

Research

Budget was a factor, requiring researching products to suit. Need for entertaining led to a large outdoor area, with pool deck, outdoor dining and powder room. A multifunctional media/family room, and open-planned living, dining and kitchen areas maximized space. Kitchen centralized for easy access to interior dining, and exterior dining and pool. Large window above dining and kitchen areas allowed maximum use of natural light. Pool set to the back to maximize sunshine during day, with cooler outdoor area as sun sets in front. Guest suite and home office located upstairs for privacy.

Inspiration

The clients for this project were young professionals, constructing their first home. HomeWork Design Studio joined the project in its construction phase where they had the opportunity to work with the new owners to plan and design the interior and exterior layout. The clients and the Studio agreed on a transitional design scope that merged the relatively traditional architecture with a more modern interior. Cool, clean and efficient were the Studio’s watchwords with a few WOW elements included, such as the 30ft stone facade at foyer sitting-area, and sweeping staircase on entry.
