Compared with the narrative methods of other drama types, stand-up comedies pay more attention to the peer-to-peer interactive experience between the actors and the audience, that is, the physical close dialogue experience, and the psychological zero distance empathy. Therefore, what they need to care about most in designing this kind of space is the sense of distance between actors and audience. And this sense of distance is embodied in the physical, optical and acoustic spaces, aiming to make the audience feel close to the actors and the stage.

Unique Properties

Unlike other drama types, stand up comedy pays more attention to the interactive experience with the audience. Especially for the face to face dialogue experience and the degree of empathy. Therefore, they put the distance between the actor and the audience as our top priority when designing and the whole stage. The distance reflects in many ways, such as physical space, light and shadow and acoustic. If we want our audience feel the intimacy with the actors and the stage, we need to reduce the strangeness of the actors to the space and the audience.

Production Technology

They hope the design would deliver more not just for providing an area only for watching the performance. Therefore, and they hardly worried whether the venue style and materials are fashionable enough. That even intend to weaken the artificial decoration. They want to use simple stuff to integrate the main structure of the theater so they choose bricks, cement, wall cloth and other basic materials. By arrange the light and shadow so as to guide the formation of audience which in accord with the theme of the Party.

Design Challenge

At the very beginning the stand up comedy stage was set up in bars, restaurants or other temporary places, some even renting small places to perform the show. With the gradual attention, people would ask for bigger venue for the show, however, the main function for these theaters were still not built for stand up comedy. With the continuous development of domestic stand up comedy and the rise of market foundation, how to establish a sustainable and theater model becomes our main topic.

Project Duration

The project started in March 2021 in Nanjing, China and finished in May 2021.

Operation Flow

The whole space is mainly divided into infield (the area of main body of the performance theater) and outfield (the space before admission). The stage is set up in the infield and it is the core venue to deliver the sense of ritual and to show the respect to the audience.

Research

After nearly two years of vigorous development, the performance venue has gradually developed from an accessory of other businesses to an independent stand up comedy clubs. As a pioneer of Chinese comedy, following the landing of the first stand-up comedy experimental theater two years ago, their design has become and established a set of exclusive and modernized model of stand-up comedy theater which generally applicable in the Chinese market. Ingenious and appropriate design, in our opinion, is the key to the theater space. Although the stand-up comedy is more like an export developed goods, how to build a space which perfectly demonstrates the goods and fulfills all the requirements becomings the designing topic.

Inspiration

The audience would expect more when they enter the theater. You may say that it is to obtain happiness or to escape from reality. The design of stand-up comedy seems to reply a "sense of unreality" and give people more expectations. Although the project background and concept are different, what runs through is the designer's understanding of the interactive relationship between the space and the people.
