Literary Space for Cultural Affairs Bureau, Tainan City Government
Incorporating exhibitions, catering, cultural and creative stores, and market spaces into a socially-engaged approach to public openness, they made Yeh Shyr-Tau's literary memorial museum an attractive and open form of contact with the public. They provide a context for understanding Yeh's life and work in a permanent exhibition and make the museum a literary open space by recreating the interior of Yeh's novel and constructing the landscape of Yeh's scenes from his books.

The Yeh Shyr-Tau literary memorial museum (former forestry affairs office) opened in 2012 as Taiwan's first important writer memorial hall. In this nearly 100-year-old building, they try to unite literature with emotional elements to create a literary compound space suitable for modern use and bring to life the emotional atmosphere of the writer's words through the five senses.
Curation, Renovation, Exhibition, Coffee, Taiwan, Tainan, literature, Writer, 5 senses
They try to create something interesting that connects to the museum's theme. After finding that "Drink ink", a Chinese expression, refers to a learned person or a writer, they developed the idea of putting locally roasted coffee into an ink tank as a special beverage called "ink coffee".
They need to find out the experiences of Yeh Shyr-Tau in various periods from historical documents, as well as the works reflecting Mr. Ye's residence at that time, and fully present them in the exhibition in the form of texts, photos, and videos, and in an immersive way to create the scene that easy to make a photo for social media to match the modern viewing habit.
The project started to renovate in Oct 2021 in Tainan and opened to the public in Nov 2021.
The first-floor area incorporates Yeh's elements into the design of the cafe, surrounding text silhouettes, table decorations, menus, and meals, In the form of excerpts of famous sentences or short essays. Whether you are here for the exhibition, or just simply enjoy a leisurely afternoon, Yeh's literary heritage in such an atmosphere will perfectly balanced.
While taking the stairs to the second floor, and crossing the long corridor of the museum, visitors walk into the world of Yeh’s novels step by step. The names of characters appearing in Yeh’s novels are displayed under the ceiling of the cloister with layers of the curtain. The overlapping curtains also allude to the multiverse time and space constructed by Yeh’s novels, and the characters are like providing a stargate through time and space, leading visitors into the world of literature. While looking up at this literary starry sky, visitors can connect to the online guide system to read the stories between the characters.
Yeh Shyr-Tau is a well-known writer in Taiwan. As he once said, "I have always believed that literature is the salt of the earth." From sight (physical and virtual parallel), auditory (playing Mr. Yeh's favorite classical music), taste (creating characteristic and creative food and beverages), smell (developing classic scented tea from novel sentences), and touch (cultural and creative products limited to laser engraving), curation aims to create scenarios for all senses.
