Apartment Interior for Boris and Katya Israel
The key feature of this project is the juxtaposition of two vintage French cabinets to custom-made sculptural steel pieces, bar/screen and a bookshelf. The intent was to create a visual tension between old and new, the warm aged wood with intricate intarsia of the cabinets and the industrial feel of the dark steel structures. The custom designed Harmonica Bar and Overhang, both screen and bar is the heart of the kitchen and a focal point of the entry zone of the apartment. The design concept is based on the current trends of upcycling and re-use of old furniture in a new setting.

The acquisition of two vintage French cabinets from an antiquity store marks the beginning of this interior project for a new 130 m2 apartment. They are placed in the heart of the living/dining area and are juxtaposed to two custom-made sculptural steel pieces – bar/screen and bookshelf. The intent was to create a refreshing tension between old and new - warm aged wood with intricate intarsia and the industrial feel of the dark steel structures.
vintage, remix, custom, harmonica, contemporary
Both custom pieces: Harmonica Bar and Overhang and Harmonica Shelving Unit are produced by 3 mm laser cut steel plate. The separate steel bands are then folded in a steel workshop and assembled on site.
The main challenge was to create a working prototype and to find the wright producer of the custom steel structures. The limited length of the perforated steel bands that can be machine folded was another factor that affected the overall dimensions of the final product.
The project was designed in 2016 and was executed in 2017-2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria
Harmonica Bar and Overhang is the heart of the kitchen and a focal point of the entry zone of the apartment. Both screen and bar – its graphite silhouette is reflected in the mirrored back of the tall glazed cabinet. The structure screens from the living area the access to the master bedroom and the concealed doors of the master bathroom and the powder room. The inhabitants constantly experience it's porous sculptural volume in their circulation and daily routine.
The current progressive trends of upcycling and re-use of old furniture in a contemporary setting serve as an inspiration for the design process.
