This tour route conveys to children the appeal of newspapers. This factory has a seismic isolation structure, based on the experience of the Hanshin-Awaji Great Earthquake (1995).Visitors can see the structure in underground. And through a light installation projecting newspaper articles about the earthquake across the entire underground space, visitors will vicariously experience the disaster. It is also a program to pass on the memories and lessons of the disaster to the next generation.
Graphic design, Interior design, Installation, Factory tour, Japan
From the beginning of the tour route planning, we have incorporated many ideas that visitors can touch, think about, and enjoy. In order to allow everyone to experience the entire space, we used everything from the floor to the ceiling for the exhibition. In particular, the gimmick on the wall that uses the optical illusion of letters is the first gimmick for children to enjoy this experience program.
Initially, the underground installation was planned to incorporate projection mapping, but it was not cost-effective. Therefore, we adopted eight lighting projectors that are low-cost and more flexible. This improvement plan mede it possible to realize image projection over a wide range and powerful expression.
The project started in May 2019. Completed in 2019.
Numerous quizzes are printed on the walls along the tour route, creating a space where visitors not only see but also think. In the multi-purpose room, we have created a panel that looks like a newspaper with the chronology of the history of THE KOBE SHIMBUN, which has been published for over 120 years.
In recent years, in Japan, the younger generation has become increasingly disengaged from type printing. We have planned a tour program that links the seismic isolation device in the factory's underground pit with the experience of great earthquake, and made that can raise interest in disaster prevention.
