Townhouse for gad
The design took inspiration from the poetic beauty of the Song-style literati gardens to create a more concise modern design language for the residents to immerse themselves in the enjoyable and habitable beauty. Taking the essence of the traditional lanes, relying on the natural environment of mountains and rivers, Tianqingli is gradually developed through the courtyard cluster space, the street lane communication space, and the private space of the courtyard, which can better understand the soul-stirring of the thousand-year culture.

The project is located at the north side of Shangtang River, a canal tributary of Hangzhou, as the former capital of the Southern Song Dynasty. Relying on the landscape of hills in the east, the project aims at becoming the first Song-style residential cluster with Chinese traditional gardens in China, and tries to explore the possibility of the revival of oriental classical culture from the perspective of the contemporary and sustainable development of traditional architecture.
Song-Style Residential, Oriental Tradition, Settlement, Chinese Traditional Garden
Song-style is the most exquisite but not complicated architectural form in Chinese architecture history. The project reduces complexity to simplicity by using modern architectural language while maintaining the readability of architectural symbols, applies the technology of Chinese traditional style curtain wall system mixed with aluminum alloy and wood structure, which obtains the Chinese Utility Patent, making the contemporary practice of Chinese traditional style buildings more sustainable.
Against the regular residential determinant texture and homogenized architectural style promoted by urbanization development, this project creates a new living experience responds to the local climate and traditional living habits based on the characteristics of traditional residential settlements, strives to explore a new architectural model at the junction of city and nature, and seeks the possibility of life different from urban experience.
The project started in June 2018 and finished in October 2021 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
This project combines the traditional residential form and the contemporary construction technology. From the perspective of cost and natural resources, the use of traditional Chinese style curtain wall system mixed with aluminum alloy and wooden structure can perfectly present the beautiful form of traditional buildings, ensures the performance of construction, reasonable cost and construction cycle, it can be widely used in the contemporary practice of traditional Chinese style buildings.
Since the Song Dynasty, JIE-DRAWING (to draw with a ruler and to obtain the clear boundary) had become a technique of Chinese painting. Compared with other kinds of painting, it requires to accurately and carefully reproduce the painted objects. Therefore, JIE-DRAWING has scientifically recorded the ancient buildings, urban features and living scenes of Song dynasty. Therefore, it is an important way to obtain the basis of design from the Song calligraphy and Song paintings.
This project creates the spatial pattern of multi-sided landscape and multiple courtyards, forming a direct dialogue between architecture and nature. The courtyard presents a natural openness while giving consideration to privacy. The project classifies the courtyards with the traditional Chinese garden landscape borrowing approach, thus the sequence between the private and public courtyards is more variable, which is closer to be in line with the contemporary aesthetic needs.
