Residential House for Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo e Silva
An almost round plan, with few masonry walls because nearly the entire façade is clad in glass. So, everything happens in the center, from the TV room to the office that connects to the living room, which communicates with the dining room, until it ends inside the kitchen. The strength of this project was the ability to develop 5 different experiences in the same space. Above all, designers were able to take advantage of the natural light from sunrise to sunset.

Considering that a study was made on how to use the best woods for this project, some decisions were made on not using solid wood panels, as we could not take the risk of having oscillations on the interior doors as well as on all the cabinets with the same material that were more exposed to temperature differences. Regarding the marble, quartezite was chosen for better resistance to acids and the daily use that a private residence has.
The major challenge in this project was the fact that most of the walls had a considerable slope. All the carpentry had to be done through moulds made on site after the walls were completely finished. This factor would have a tremendous impact on compliance with the construction deadlines. To solve this particular issue, the finishing of certain walls was prioritised before any other work. A specialist carpentry team worked exhaustively on these specific parts in order to finish the work within the deadline.
The project started in September 2021 in Lisbon and finished in September 2022.
The type of choice and design of each cabinet for the penthouse, allowed the users of the house a good use without the need for regular maintenance. The combination of practicality and aesthetics were positively achieved.
Before starting the architecture and interior design project, a briefing was done to understand the life style of those who would inhabit this residence. Being foreigners, coming from another continent, it was crucial to understand the main customs and experiences practiced daily by them. The objective of this investigation was, mainly, to know how to connect two distinct cultures in a way that, while living in another country, they could feel "at home" and minimize aspects that could be considered negative or difficult to manage. For this, different experiences were provided in order to understand their behaviour and opinion in the different situations to which they were exposed. This experience allowed a better understanding of how to provide the best atmosphere in their own home.
For the design of this penthouse, a sketch was drawn considering the aesthetics of the space as if it were a spaceship. One of the concerns was to understand the behaviour of colours in general, both in the fabrics chosen and the type of wood and marble stones, in relation to the solar orientation of the flat. Understanding this was fundamental to do a thorough lighting study and choose the right colours for each room.
