Residential House for XIN DAN design
Back to One's True Nature, a duplex residence a couple shares with their mother, features a design that maximizes the layout's openness and brightness. Hallways dividing the space are reduced, and the main and secondary flows are configured based on functional needs. Thus the space becomes a container of life centering on its dwellers' daily habits and needs and is divided into the main and secondary domains that encompass both a private area for personal use and a shared section for the family to interact.

As an avid mountain-climber, the homeowner wishes to relish the openness and joy upon reaching the summit even at home. Hence the design team installs a bluish green marble wall at the entryway and adorns the ceiling with three-dimensional curves to resemble the beautiful contour of mountain ridges. The living-dining room section has an open layout, and at every angle it looks like a complete painting without any blind spot.

The living room and the dining room are separated by the ceiling, whose indirect recessed lighting makes the illumination even and coherent and whose chamfered edges also enhance elegance and rhythm. The severed TV-wall marble deliberately leaves a tapering fissure leading from the living room to the ancestral hall to connect the two sections. The narrow facets of the marble cuts are veneered with titanium-plated metal.
In tune with the homeowner’s character, the design features low-chroma earth tones to shape a simple but grand layout. Seamless cloth makes the walls look complete, and, together with hardwood veins, creates a warm, homey feel and accents layers in the space. Solemn and serene like a mountain, the residence is refreshing and pleasant, allowing one to go back to one’s true nature, just like how one feels upon reaching the summit.
The project finished in September 2022 in Taipei City, Taiwan.
Kitchenware for both Chinese and Western cuisines is installed. The Chinese section is defined by a sliding door to prevent smoke and fume from permeating everywhere. In the Western kitchen, the white cabinetry is coherent with the colors in the living-dining room, and stone used on the walls and the tiles further accentuates elegance in the section. It is where the family usually sit sampling tea, and is ideal for entertaining friends and relatives on holidays.
The study between the living room and the master bedroom is a transition that, defined by sliding doors of different sizes and display cabinets, looks neat and orderly. As the glass sliding door between the study and the living room can be opened and closed at will, the male homeowner can use the computer in the study while the female homeowner and his mother can enjoy themselves in the sofa area, each taking delight in their separate spaces and yet interacting simultaneously.
