Unique Properties

The design uses an umbrella-shaped structure to distill the collected rainwater into potable water through solar energy. The structure could be widely replicated in Cairo and throughout the developing Islamic region to alleviate local water scarcity problems. Muslims pray five times a day, so mosques in neighborhoods like this are the most frequented public places for local residents. The design of the distillation system here also takes into account the habits of the local residents.

Production Technology

The upper surface of the umbrella structure is a thin membrane with a low center and a high periphery. Water from below evaporates and condenses onto the membrane through solar energy, and then converges to the lowest point in the center, where the collected distilled water is transported to the water tanks or water taps through pipes inside the columns below.

Inspiration

This design is based on my volunteer experience in Cairo, where I witnessed the pervasive deficiency in water supply and sanitation. The proposed system could be applied to any small mosque that can be found throughout Cairo, with an octagonal umbrella structure that echoes the local religious patterns. The design of the distillation system here also takes into account the habits of the local residents. At the same time, some of the mosque's original building materials can be be reused.

Project Overview

Lihan Jin Mosque with Solar Distiller System has been a Bronze winner in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design award category in the year 2022 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
