Urban Regeneration for Giacinto Faba
Renaissance seeks the rebirth of a forgotten suburb, deprived of memory, and marked by unhappy episodes. The design concept will restore to the city of Pescara two spaces, besides the restyling of the existing park, a new square will be brought to life by the void created by the demolition of three dilapidated buildings where the architecture of the 70s forms the setting. The circular fountain and the unarranged trees will characterize the design of the square. The design also includes innovative techniques and sustainable materials such as pervious concrete for the surfacing.

The dilapidation of the built space in the future square and the neglect of the natural space in the Speranza park reflect the current state of the intervention area. The aim is to redevelop the area, restoring dignity and value to the 60s and 70s Pescara housing, with the design of a square and the restyling of the existing park. At the centre of the square, in the shape of concentric circles, a fountain as a beating heart, surrounded by trees, including native species, that change with the seasons. While the restoration of the park aims to develop a green lung, making it a visiting card.

Innovative techniques and sustainable materials in the realization of the project. The pavement in the centre of the square as well as the path of the park are made of pervious concrete, to facilitate the discharge of rainwater and reduce the summer temperature. The pervious concrete is a mixture composed of cements, water, additives and sand free aggregates in the right proportions. While the remaining part of the square is in combed concrete. Elettronic Interface Led technology has been used to manage the remote control and dimming of the lighting system of the project for energy saving.
Renaissance represents the rebirth of a forgotten suburb, devoid of memory and marked by various vicissitudes. The challenge has been to restore sociality, affection and value through this design. The urban planning variant thus allows a transformation from a residential area to a public space, a place of meetings and regeneration. The restyling of the area, the wise use of pervious concrete and the enhancement of the prior park, restore dignity and a future, transforming abandonment into a renewed promise of life.
The project started in June 2021 in Pescara and ended in November 2021 in Pescara
The operation takes shape through the demolition of three dilapidated buildings. The transformation takes place by way of an urban renovation project that includes both the creation of a square and the restyling and restoration of an existing park. Interaction develops between residents and non residents, thanks also to the proximity of sports facilities. A good result is obtained both by improving human relationships and enhancing environmental beauty by planting new trees. The design implements a process that optimizes space and promotes sociality.
Historical analysis and local testimonies have not revealed citations for the design of the square. Indeed, the project’s inspiration was the metaphor of the stone falling into the water. The metaphor gave rise to an idea that supports the business of the project and the sociality of the square as a meeting place and interactions between residents, becoming a point of aggregation for the community. In a different way, in the park the historical analysis brought to light traces of Gothic plots, highlighted in the design with alleyways transversal to the lengthways path.
The design idea of Renaissance, in the future square, a place devoid of memory, is inspired by the stone which, falling into the water, generates concentric waves. As the waves propagate, so circular areas with trees and shrubs develop in the square, giving life and dynamism to the environment. For the park, on the other hand, the inspiration originates from the Gothic plots of the ancient maps, represented in the project by small paths transversal to the lengthways path, which generate an effect of movement and connection.
