Upholstered Joinery for Commercial Upholstery Solutions (Vic) Pty Ltd

The Buildings design concept was to provide a unique but standardised work enviroment. By limiting the amount of built-in joinery to specialised Banquette Seating and componentry, communal benches and loose furniture, the space has not only been designed for its current occupants, but also considers the inplications of future expansion.

Unique Properties

Utilising a floorplan of 1650m2, the fitout consited of: *Collaborative and flexible working spaces *Meeting Rooms and Executive meeting spaces *Feature curved and angular banquette seating *Feature joinery to communal areas *Large timber ceiling panels

Production Technology

A combination of both curved and angular design for the seating helped to breakup the main areas as well as maximising the natural light from the fully glazed facades to the Buildings sides.

Design Challenge

The greatest challenge was to correctly achieve the internal and external angled seating structure, ensuring it was fit for the purpose without compromising on strength, stability and the required shape.

Project Duration

The project was a fast tracked programme working two shifts over a 7 week periord.

Operation Flow

The design concept draws on a continuous open area that wraps around the building core. By breaking up certain areas with the curved and elongated Banquettes the occupants could achieve both an open plan workspace with the added privacy if required.

Research

In order to meet the design brief for the Banquette Seating and Joinery items CUS looked at the other components that made up the project such as the angled coloured floor tiles, timber ceiling struts and the overall finishes. In this way the built-in seating and joinery blends in with this items to become a part of the workspace without actually standing out.

Inspiration

To incorporate the Client's requirements for both open and private office spaces, shared conference and meeting rooms with the flexability to expand at a later date.

RMIT Bldg 88 Upholstered Joinery has been a Iron winner in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution.
