Private House for gronych + dollega architekten

Their goal was to transform a very strict development plan into a site-independent architectural form, while the existing trees should become part of the whole. The architecture develops its own scale for the landscape and the built environment. The focus here is the definition of the relationships between inside and outside, the old trees and the architectural form. The play of light and shadow of the trees as well as the reflections of the water surface in front of the glazed facades create intense spatial atmospheres.

Unique Properties

The architecture develops its own sensitive scale to the landscape and the built environment. The aim was to define generous relationships between inside and outside on the small property with valuable trees and the given building scale. The play of light and shades of the trees as well as the reflections of the water surface in front of the glazed facades create intense room atmospheres.

Production Technology

Sustainability has been the main objective regarding the construction of the building. All materials were utilized with the focus on meaningfulness. The dwelling house and the carport consist of concrete due to the spans, geometries as well as the plasticity. Steel V-supports carry the loads. The attic consists of prefabricated elemental wooden stud walls and ceilings. Heating and cooling is provided via an air heat pump. Thermal comfort is achieved by capillary heating mats (low temperature).

Design Challenge

The confrontation with the strict planning law requirements was the biggest challenge. Through the experimental search for the specific structural form, an architecture based on the location could be developed, free from any constraints and open to human beings with all their senses and emotions.

Project Duration

Bad Homburg, Germany 2016

Operation Flow

A tilted exterior wall is used to create the airspace that connects the ground floor with the upper floor, while also enabling natural lighting for the basement. The sloping high windows upstairs create the feeling of living within the treetops. The different levels are accessed by an open steel staircase, which also serves as a highly sculptural element of the inside area. The monolithically shaped facade of the building creates a distinct measurement in cohesion with the opulent tree population of the property.

Research

The possible arrangements of the residential levels on the limited area of the building dimensions as well as in the given cubature underwent intensive examination. The spatial aspects, orientation, light, water, plastic shape and the valuable tree population were of great importance.

Inspiration

Our goal was to transform a very strict development plan into a serene, powerful and location-independent architectural form, while the existing trees should become part of the whole.
