Residence for Zhang Wanxiao
The project was located on the ground floor of a multi-story building. The second floor is the entrance hallway, and the next floor is the first floor and basement. In the surrounding environment, the basement was completely closed. The first and second floors are closed on three sides with poor ventilation and lighting. Through the transformation of the interior space structure and application of the aerodynamics technology, the designer carried out a reasonable layout of the indoor structure, solved the problems of ventilation and lighting, and improved the use area of the house.

The project is a special-shaped residential unit in a multi-story building with three levels. The second level is entrance hallway and the next is the first floor and basement with poor lighting and ventilation. By reasonable transformation of the interior structure, the designer solved the problem of interior lighting and ventilation and created a living space with good lighting, comfortable environment and multiple functions for the owner, which greatly enhanced the value of the house.
Interior, design, structural transformation, space, lighting, patio, staircase, aerodynamics
The designer completed the transformation and reasonable use of the limited space through three steps. Firstly, structural adjustment: in order to improve the ventilation and lighting of the original structure, the designer built four lighting patios in the basement to connect with the first level, and changed the staircase into an oblique and linear line to run through the three floors, forming the best air circulation motion line in the vertical and horizontal directions of the interior space. At the same time, the lighting problem of the basement was solved, and the use efficiency and living comfort of the interior space was increased effectively. Secondly, spatial layout: the space was designed with dynamic and static separation, as well as reasonable motion lines. The designer regarded the second floor with good lighting as the main bedroom and children's room, separated from the public activity area, and set the motion lines for public activity area along the staircases. The living space on the first floor is completely open with no barrier from the outdoor. Maximum lighting efficiency was ensured. After the renovation, the negative first floor is equipped with a study, tea room, fitness space, etc., creating a good communication environment for the family members. Thirdly, design language: light tones are used throughout the whole space to form a bright and concise space impression. The patio on the negative first floor adopts Japanese patio design technique, which is characterized by tranquility, Wabi-sabi and Zen. Through the patio, the whole home space is penetrated to allow the breath flow, make the vision transparent and achieve the purpose of natural harmony for human habitation.
In this project, the entire space of the original building was closed on three sides, the designer needs to reasonably transform the interior structure to form a good natural air flow. According to the principle of aerodynamics, the designer designed the staircase linearly to run through the three floors. The four patios in the basement communicated with the windows upstairs effectively, forming the flow path of interior air, which completely changed the living experience of the entire space.
Design Cycle: March 2017-May 2017 Construction Period: June 2017-May 2018 Project Completion Time: May 2018 Project Location: Poly Villa, Jiangbei District, Chongqing
In the original structure, the basement was completely closed and could not be used as living space. In the basement, the designer set up four lighting patios, bringing the outdoor sunlight and natural air into the interior. Japanese dry landscapes and miniature gardens are set in the patio, bringing natural elements into the interior and creating a multifunctional space with abundant light. The converted basement eventually became the most attractive activity area in the entire space.
Improvement of the interior ventilation and lighting environment through the transformation of interior structure; Use of interior patio; Space transformation of enclosed basement; Application of aerodynamics in interior design
In ancient Chinese architecture, the patio was called the heart of architecture, which has the function of regulating Feng Shui and communicating with nature. The designer took the patio as the most important design element of the project. Based on the principles of aerodynamics and design aesthetics, four patios with different functions and shapes were set up, which fundamentally solved the problem of ventilation and lighting, and also formed the landscape features in the interior space.
