Living Center for RUF Architects
The project was designed to form an urban square by chamfered corners to maintain the greatest interaction and openness between the living center and the city. The square formed by chamfered corners of the building is not only a display platform in harmony with the city, but also a natural convergence point of vitality. Considering that this is a long and narrow urban corner land, the strip-shaped layout can perfectly fit its overall boundary attribute. A brand new super-scale interface strongly stimulates the vitality of the city.

On the second floor of the building, 18 metal shuttle-shaped louvers are embedded in the 8,400 width like rhythmic keys. Each louver rotates 10 degrees and is installed at a distance of 450 intervals, which gives full consideration to the actual functions and transparency of vision.
The arched space formed inadvertently between two mushroom-shaped columns creates a kind of spatio-temporal dialogue, which actually beautifies the structural intention of the cow-leg pillars and arch trusses in the old workshop. The anti-gravity and sense of history of the mushroom columns interweave in the background of the interlayer arc light strips, presenting some kind of contradiction and uncertainty.
The project started in Dec. 2019 in Handan City, Hebei Province, China and was completed in March 2020.
By chamfered corners, architects formed an urban square to maintain the greatest interaction and openness between the living center and the city, making it a good place for residents to chat, play chess, take a walk and walk dogs. This vivid pocket square injects a kind of new energy into the city.
Along with the development and urbanization of China continues, the project is part of the updates in the city. Time flies, decades of years have passed, and industries are constantly improving and updating. In the past 30 years with the new production methods and forces coming up, those factories and affiliates built by old production force need to be updated constantly, adapting to all the functions required by the new productive relations.
The project locates in the once glorious Handan Oxygenerator Factory. Founded in 1946, it has rapidly become a forgotten urban ruin due to the recent change of industry. The land, which bears the memory of generations, has undergone fractured changes in an instant. The original intention of the design is to realize urban renewal in an industrial heritage of low industrial aesthetic value, and to give new life to this large area of forgotten cold ruins and bring hope and joy to the city.
