Wrapped Volumes

Sales Office for The BAD Studio

Located on outskirts of an industrial city, Wrapped Volumes caters as a sales pavilion for a developer's residential project. Without any evident immediate context, the pavilion takes its cues from the connecting road. Designers transformed this progressive movement of the road along with the site into a harmonious wrapped geometry. As a result, the structure elevates itself from the ground. Some parts of this wrap form a landscape layer and other protective skin on the south. The pavilion weaves the landscape and structure, engaging an individual to transcend from exterior to interior spaces.

Unique Properties

Being a temporary structure, the idea was to reduce the cost and at the same time giving a visitor a sumptuous feel. Translating the movement of road and WRAPPING VOLUMES gives excellent vibrant spaces, where light and shadow play equally important roles in intensifying the geometry. The office weaves the landscape and structure by engaging visitor to transcend from exterior to interior spaces to experience a sumptuous character of compact interior spaces washed in natural light..

Production Technology

The building is composite structure with partial metal columns and insulated corrugated sheet roofing along with partial R.C.C frame structure to support roof. Tinted Glass glazing enhances the floating mass levitated through metal columns. The facade is ribbed plaster manually crafted by local craftsman. The flooring is cement texture finished vitrified tiles, while landscape zone comprises of Kota Stone, along with paving blocks in the outdoor pathways and parking zone.

Design Challenge

It was difficult for local masons to understand and construct the structure with a complex geometrical form. To overcome this, we mapped the points on-site by erecting poles and tying a string to achieve the form. Secondly, the facade poses a ribbed plaster. Generally, plaster tends to fall off if hit hard. We tried to re-create the ratio of cement to sand until the plaster firmly adhered to the wall. A series of samples with different size and proportions were created as a part of the research.

Project Duration

The project started in November 2018 and got completed in February 2019, The Project is located in Bharuch, Gujarat, India

Operation Flow

As one enters, tones of grey on wall and floors are complemented by the outdoor greens of landscape, drawing an individual to a reception foyer. The sales area along the south side receives filtered light through the wrapped facade with minimal heating. Being a compact space, the passage along the north side with glass pane brings ample natural light giving a larger feel. The movement terminates at the director’s cabin, a lavish space with an outdoor deck and connecting green space.

Research

We stared our initial research by understanding the immediate context and approach to the site to understand the flow of users . It was also important to keep in mind the typology of people visiting the building to retain hierarchy of public to private places. Analyzing the climatic factors to device the allocation of spaces to achieve diffused natural light into the interior spaces. It was very important to achieve a striking material aspects, responding to climate and local availability.

Inspiration

The site lacks specific context, at the same time the connecting approach road chops the site into a trapezoidal shape. We tried to transform this progressive movement of the road along the site into geometry by wrapping up the spaces into a continuous facade, With an intent where the structure lifts itself up from the ground and transforms itself into a dynamic geometry. Some parts of this wrap form a landscape layer, while others a protective skin, reducing the heat gain from the south.
