Design Challenge

The hardest challenge of the project is because the waves consist of different curves, we have to set up rules to control the curvature, so that although the length were different, but they have the same scale. So the team created a rule of 90cm, 180cm grid and 20cm height on the landscape, to make the curves appear smooth, and also to make it easier on the construction phase.

Project Duration

Project Duration : 5 months Location : Yilan County, Taiwan.

Operation Flow

The cultural park was once a paper factory. During the World War II, the factory was air-raided, thus the landscape is to commemorate the victims, and to preserve the imagery of the factory. As an outdoor public space, the design has to be universal and could benefit people from all ages. The Paperscapes were designed not just as a memorial landscape, but as an outdoor activity and leisure space for the park, the different heights of the waves also designed for children to play in. The paperscapes preserve memories from the past, also bring hope for the future.

Research

The team researched the characteristic of forms that paper can make. The main objective of the research is to preserve the imagery of the paper factory with the landscape. The paperscapes use characteristics of paper as concept; from rigid to smooth form of papers. Other than the form of the landscape, the team also did researches about types of spaces that the park needs; because the site was once a factory, it did not has sufficient outdoor space for activities and leisure. The design also aims to provide vegetation and greenery for the park. The team utilizes local vegetation that are suitable in the climate; one of which is the Pennisetum, a native type of grass that were used in paper-making in the past. Through different scales and arrays, the design creates a set of moving waves emerging from the landscape. The waves are also designed for children to play in safely; the continuity of the landscape smoothly flows up and down, provides a playground where children can experience directly. The spaces between waves provide smaller and more intimate spaces for people to relax in. The team believes that memorial park does not always have to be melancholy, but can also be enjoyable for the visitors.

Inspiration

The Geometric Array. To commemorate the victims of the air raid during the World War II that took place on the Zhongxing Paper Mill, the memorial park was designed in a geometric array to resemble the scars that were inflicted to humanity, gradually healing through the soothing waves of the flowing paperscapes, moving forward to the new world, but never forgotten.
