Senior houses should be more creative and dramatic. Kamio challenged to make more art feeling atmosphere by designing the spaces like art gallery with many geometric expressions. In the main lounge, Kamio focused on the ceiling as an important design aspect; rather than a flat ceiling, he built slightly different ceiling height levels with several the colored circle shapes. The lighting reflections were changed as a result and it gave the space more depth and expanses; Kamio successfully leaded the visitor eyes not only to the floors but also to the ceilings, and gained the extraordinariness.
senior house, nursery house, senior second home, senior community, graphical floor, graphical wall
In expressing the graphics on the walls and floors, Kamio used similar materials as much as possible to keep costs down, such as wooden panels and PVC sheets. He cut those materials to small pieces and gathering them back in new unique patterns together. As a result, the spaces gained the dimensional rhythms and a variety of visual impressions.
The building is located beside a public park in the residential area which is protected by lots of rules such as shape and color regulations. Because the building has large glass walls and ti can be easily recognized the interior even from the outside, we also needed to concern carefully the color coordinate even for the inner spaces to fit to the environment and laws. Perhaps it was one of the hardest part in the project. the team have researched many combinations of the color hue, brightness, and lighting effect, and we tried to figure out the best design expression.
The Project started in December 2018 and finished in April 2021, in Tokyo Japan
The team made and used lots of 3D images and models to understand the actual visual effects of the graphic expressions. It was very effective to understand the relationships and flows of each space.
During the project studies, the team talked with several senior peoples about what they are interested in and willing to enjoy in their retirement life. Also, the team visited several art galleries for graphic art studies.
