Roof Top Restaurant for Studio K-7
A fusion of sustainable and Natural Materials with organic pattern in design is a key factor of this design. Kolhapur is known for its rich heritage of art, architecture and culture of India. The suburb of Kolhapur is a cotton textile hub of India. Designers have taken a clue from this local context and have designed the restaurant using recycled Paper Tubes that are used to roll the fabric. It portrays the design philosophy of repetition of a module to generate patterns and textures. One can enjoy sunsets and cocktails while the paper tubes oscillate with the natural wind on the roof top.

20521 Paper Tubes hung from the ceiling is the key factor of parametric installation of this restaurant. It portrays the design philosophy of repetition of a module to generate patterns. Also it establishes the local context of textile mills around the city. Waves formed by the organic pattern of paper tubes oscillate with the wind that creates drama and interactive ceiling patterns. Sustainable and green materials like recycled paper tubes, stone and wood makes it a completely green design.

Recycled paper tubes create organic and parametric ceiling design of this restaurant. Various sections that are created via patterns of ceiling is achieved by a play of number of paper tubes acting as a module. The paper tubes act as a wrapping element to otherwise a raw structure. Black tone of basalt stone on walls and grey ceramic floor complement the raw paper tubes on ceiling. Students of architecture were engaged on site to learn and understand the construction of parametric design.
The place is on the roof top of existing hotel. Positions of existing services of building imposed on having Kitchen on one side thus making the space narrower and feel long. Different sections were needed to break the linear feel of the space yet not compromising on quality of space. Modules of Paper tubes were to be designed so as to give feel of privacy without compromising on visual continuity. Repetition of modules was the key factor in design. Each tube needed a coding and numbering so as to get it fixed at right place. Also, the physical installation was a challenge as the roof top was covered with solar panels and we needed to have second frame in fabrication for the installation of ceiling. Explaining installation process to students of architecture was another challenge as they had no experience of on site working.
Project started in August 2021 and got completed in October 2021. It is situated on the roof top of a hotel, Citrus at Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.
Pattern of paper tube ceiling on both sides of reception lobby act as directive and separators of sections visually. The first section of restaurant has an open pizza counter on one side and a sun deck on the far west side. Other side of the restaurant hosts an enclosed bar area and open seating area. Transparent glass enclosure establishes visual connection with all sections and the ceiling pattern flows seamlessly through all the sections establishing continuity and union of spaces. One can enjoy sunset deck as sundowners start occupying the space, can enjoy Island Bar with cocktails or can enjoy starry sky in open deck area.
Use of Paper tubes for the parametric ceiling design was key factor in the design. Various softwares like sketch up, Rhino were used to create the desired pattern and the effect. Paper tubes were tested by applying various coats to withstand the moisture in rainy season. Also coating against fire were studied and suitable coatings were applied before installation.
Kolhapur is known for its rich heritage of art, architecture and culture of India. The suburb of Kolhapur is a cotton textile hub of India. Thought of connecting local context and using recycled Paper Tubes that are used to roll the textile was thus evolved. Creating an experience through fusion of sustainable and Natural Materials with organic pattern in design was the key factor. Taking advantage of natural breeze through out the year was the concept behind creating interactive ceiling.
