Beyond The Flow

Commercial Space for Nong Mu Design Engineering Company

The designer utilized the fire elements, smoke, and aroma in this project and projected them into the design concept. The design used the benefits of the large windows, using them to create a reflective pane to improve the iron ring's aesthetic and blend the exterior and courtyard inwards. The interior and exterior succeed in maintaining a consistent feel through smart lighting placements and geometric shapes. The restaurant benefits from the dim and earthy tones of the spatial colors to improve customers' experience through the sense of comfort from both the colors and curved lines.

Unique Properties

The arcshaped aspects extend from the exterior inwards, blending the space superbly methodical. The arced overhead pathways create the sense of passage from one room to the other without vertical walls and barriers. Beautifully designed geometric holes scattered around the space allows light and fragrance to flow through in a borderless form elegantly. Through the meticulously placed arched light strips and light bulbs, customers gain the ability to freely absorb the beautiful visuals of the space while enhancing their meal at the same time.

Production Technology

The interior walls are made of natural laterite containing diatomaceous earth. It consists of humidity tolerance, odor absorption, and maximum heat capacity. Laterite bricks are natural stones that have cooling and thermal insulating properties. Rice straw is added, serving several purposes, the rice straws contain air purification properties through their natural fragrance. The purification aspect is commendable alone, drastically reducing the stench of thick oil in the air.

Design Challenge

High quality ventilation system and equipment are critical for a grill restaurant like this. The designers at Nong Mu could muster up multiple methods to manage smoke; one being the installation of hidden smoke ventilation systems. The downdraft of the ventilation prevents smoke from filling the air, thus eliminating the need to install overhead ventilation equipment. The hidden vent provided an effective way to manage smoke and maintain the much-improved aesthetic of the restaurant.

Project Duration

The project is located in Taichung, Taiwan. The design commenced in November 2020 and will be completed in January 2021.

Operation Flow

The light strips illuminate the reflective glass behind at night, creating an infinite ring optical illusion. The luminous lights and soft mists instantly attract pedestrians and pique interest and curiosity. Light strips are further utilized on the interior to assist in blending on the outside. The designers utilized the benefits of the large windows, using them to create a reflective pane to improve the iron ring's aesthetic and blend the exterior and courtyard inwards.

Research

The dining area adopts an open design, benefiting from two arc passages to replicate moving lines and space flow. The tea area is a central location and a connecting channel for multiple areas. Through smart placements of lighting and table arrangements, staff can maintain maximum efficiency without clutter, as a result, this boosts operation capabilities of the establishment and thus improves customer dining experience further.

Inspiration

The project design concept relies on the fundamentals of cave like, porous systems. The designer transformed the space into curved tunnel systems on the interior while being geometrical squares on the exterior. The exterior relies on crevices, gaps, and scattered holes to allow light and openness to seep inwards. The attractive arched entrance is durable and aesthetic. An incredible aurora of smoke is replicated under the combination of light and mist.
