The fusion of Han and Tibetan styles, together with the complementarity of commercial value and architectural aesthetics, are the keys to the project. They subtly integrated modern civilization and traditional culture, taking the Tibetan elements as the background instead of the main theme. The hotel space is intended to allow for mental relaxation, visual purification and spiritual meditation.
Nature, Tibetan elements, perception of the surroundings, spiritual purification, elegance, philosophy of a natural and casual life
The glass was insulated and strengthened, so as the snow load of the roof. The surface of the natural stones was painted with a protective layer. Old anti-corrosion wood was polished and reused. Outdoor wood wall panels were carbonized. Micro-cement was used as the main coating for walls. Original wood, not overly decorated, was utilized as a main material. Through a carbonization process, the wood panels become more oxidation-and weather-resistant and meanwhile reflect a rustic Tibetan style.
The project is situated in the Guxiang quarter in Bomi County. Due to the complicated topology, most of the raw materials had to be transported from the mainland via varying difficult trains to the site. This increased the transportation cost. In addition, all construction workers are local people, so the construction techniques can hardly be compared with those in inland regions. Moreover, the Galang Palace stands on a mountain platform connected by winding roads, forbidding large-scale construction.
The project started in September 2021 and finished in August 2022 in Galang Village, Guxiang, Bomi, Tibet Autonomous Region, China.
By refraining from over-emphasis on design, the hotel leaves the guests' emotions undisturbed. The project applied simplistic design expressions, and incorporated an elegant temperament and easygoing philosophy of life into the hotel. The architectural space and furnishings bring a unique atmosphere and warmth. Complete, abundant functions are configured with a free spatial pattern. The large floor-to-ceiling glass windows stimulate the interaction between people and nature.
The design team needed to not only work out a creative design scheme, but also to communicate, organize and coordinate with local construction teams, so as to realize the design scheme to the greatest extent possible with locally available technology, materials and a controllable budget. They expect a trip of spiritual purification, hoping to return to the real self and escape from the secular world. The design team applied the idea of "less is more".
Occupying a blessed site with snow-capped mountains and lakes outside the windows, the hotel shows a reverence for nature and conceals itself in the scene in the most unpretentious way. Hidden in this paradise, the YS Retreat is designed with the philosophy of "veiled serenity". Surrounded by mountains, the hotel is naturally integrated with the environment. Traces of design are minimized in the interior, leaving nature, scenery and space to the guests.
