Production Technology

The architectural design of the Regala Skycity Hotel focuses on creating a building that is both functional and visually striking. The building was designed in a tripartite division. The base of the building features a dynamic and fluid design that reflects the movement and energy of the flight paths from Hong Kong to the rest of the world. The design incorporates infinite vertical lines in an array of greys, creating an interesting and visually engaging exterior that mimics the Hong Kong infamous skyline. The shaft of the building is made with unitized curtain wall system. The external facade offers a sleek and modern appearance, while also being highly energy-efficient and sustainable. The system is made up of pre-assembled units that are fabricated off-site and then installed on the building's exterior. This method of construction offers a range of benefits, including improved quality control, reduced construction time, and minimized disruption to the surrounding area. The reflective glass allows it to blend seamlessly into its environment and creates a mirrored effect that reflects the blue sky, making the building appear almost invisible at times. The crown of the building is designed to be "edgeless," creating a sense of continuity between the building and the sky. The crown features a minimalist and modern design, with a focus on creating a sense of openness and lightness. The crown is also designed to be highly functional, with a range of facilities for guests, such as a rooftop bar, a jogging path, outdoor gym facility and lounging areas. The internal space started off with the idea of "one space planning", which focuses on creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior of the building. This design approach draws the natural surroundings into the hotel while allowing guests to enjoy the comfort and luxury of the interior spaces. The hotel's guest rooms are designed to offer a similar sense of seamless integration with the natural surroundings. The rooms feature large windows that offer expansive views of the new airport runway. The hotel offers three unique restaurants, each with its own distinctive interior design and culinary experience. The first restaurant’s layout is open-plan with minimalist decor, allowing guests to enjoy the stunning views while dining, and a menu featuring international dishes with a creative twist. The second restaurant boasts an exotic charm, featuring selection of creative furniture and an external laced staircase, serving a menu of western food. Finally, the third restaurant is an elegant Chinese fine dining establishment, offering an exquisite menu and an extensive wine list. Overall, the design concept for the hotel's interior and exterior is focused on creating a seamless integration with the surrounding environment, while also providing guests with a luxurious and comfortable experience. The use of a unitized curtain wall system for the external facade offers a modern and sustainable solution, while the "one space planning" approach to the interior design allows for a sense of openness and cohesiveness throughout the hotel.

Design Challenge

The Regala Skycity Hotel's design challenge is to create an innovative yet visually stunning building that maximizes the triangular site's potential. The design should incorporate natural light, green spaces and stunning views of the new Hong Kong Airport Runway.

Project Duration

The project started in 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in 2021

Operation Flow

Hotel guests would either check-in via our smart check-in system or at our front-desk that was designed to have an open view looking through the restaurant behind and into the greenery outside the hotel. After check-in, they could visit the swimming pool right in the center of the hotel. Then watch the sunset on the hotel roof deck before having a nice dinner at one of the award-winning restaurants overlooking the new runway of Hong Kong International Airport.

Research

During the early stage, the designer needed to consider room layouts, accessibility, sustainability, building codes, brand identity, and technology used in the hotel. Features such as bathrooms, storage, and seating areas must be incorporated to maximize space and ensure guest comfort. Accessibility features like ramps and elevators was properly designed and incorporated. Compliance with local building codes is important for safety and legality. Brand identity was well thought out and reflected in the design, and technology was integrated to enhance the guest experience.

Inspiration

The design of the building was inspired by an optical crystal prism. The natural shape of the building not only maximizes the usage of land, but the use of reflective glass on the curtain wall makes it blended into its environment yet refracts light like a crystal prism in interesting ways.
