The project is inspired by the client's personal style exhibits a myriad of complexities, beginning with a minimalist impression, carefully delineating the complexity within. We try to translate the multiplicity into architectural vocabulary and spatial techniques. By showcasing a contradictory cohesion and delving into the complex needs of living spaces. In a low-saturation color scheme setting, the juxtaposition of serpentinite flooring and stainless steel textured walls creates a strong atmospheric presence. The curved cracked TV wall, along with the classical decorative columns with modern pedestal replacement, exudes a sculptural artistic effect. Red is used as the accent color in furniture details, embodying delicate emotional nuances.
Through the fusion and clash of architectural vocabularies, we artfully create a contradictory yet cohesive ambiance in this residence. We boldly challenge the notion of serene minimalism, exploring its nuanced response to the essential need for emotional stability and its intricate relationship with self-actualization and personal fulfillment.
Completed on Sep 2023, Taichung city, Taiwan.
To accommodate various activities like socializing, dining, entertainment, and meetings while maintaining flexibility for future layout changes, we eliminated partitions in common areas, allowing free flow of light and movement. Material defines zones without restricting mobility. Columns subtly divide areas and mark the beginning of the corridor. The entrance of master bedroom is concealed by the dark corridor, preserving user privacy.
The project aims to create a pure and unique residential atmosphere, utilizing relatively simple building materials predominantly sourced locally. This includes ivory-white paint for walls and ceilings, eco-friendly clay made from sediment in Taiwan's reservoirs, and shattered serpentinite from Hualien. Large tiles are not considered due to usage waste. Most furniture designs incorporate considerations for future disassembly and reassembly, utilizing easy-to-maintain and durable materials such as metal and glass to prolong furniture lifespan.
Curves and angles are often viewed as distinct stylistic languages, yet in geometry, the trigonometric functions are also called circular functions because the same referring of the arc on a circle. In this project, geometric forms arranged in a scattered manner repeatedly appear, highlighting the sense of order in structure, and breaking the rules with unexpected asymmetrical forms. The resulting "deconstructive minimalism" is this project's interpretation of multiplicity.
