The design team have selected oak as the key material for the floors, ceiling beams, cabinetry and the doors which transformed the space entirely with a natural yet contemporary style. In some areas of the house the oak finishes have been blended with marble. All the wood and stone work was done in collaboration with local teams and craftsmen. Although designed as a summer house, all the necessary climatic infrastructure has been prepared for living in this house in all 4 seasons.
Design research for Port House involved an analysis of the site's topography and climate. The common and private living areas strategically positioned in the house to optimize natural light and create comfortable living spaces. CAD software was used to develop detailed models and visualizations, refining the design to seamlessly merge the interior and exterior. Drawing inspiration from the region's cultural heritage, local materials and finishes were incorporated to promote a sense of identity.
The project started in February 2023 in Alachati, Izmir and completed in September 2023.
The layout of the 2-storey house ensures a smooth flow of design language between spaces, allowing for easy navigation and interaction. The operation of the house prioritises the needs of the owner's family of 5. The entrance to the house is on the first floor. Three spacious bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are located on this floor. A semi-open corridor connects this floor with the open living area on the ground floor. The ground floor is characterised by the open plan living room where the double height gallery ceiling and large windows create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. The ground floor houses the living area, dining room, kitchen, laundry room and the master bedroom which opens to the garden. Sliding doors bring natural light, garden and sea views into the space.
The research method involved a detailed study of the villa's architectural features and geographical location, followed by in-depth discussions with the homeowners to gain an in-depth insight into their lifestyle and needs. The homeowners dreamed of a warm and serene living space in a contemporary and timeless style.
