Renovation Plan for a Sixth Industrialization Support Facility for Agricultural Products. The overall concept of the facility is "FARM & CRAFT," aiming to create a space where diverse people can experience agriculture firsthand. The facility incorporates the concept of "Foodscap" a coined term combining FOOD + LANDSCAPE, to establish a new interactive space for engaging with agricultural products—where visitors can eat, touch, grow, and enjoy the connection with food and nature. We also created original ambient music for this facility.
Agriculture, Foodscape, hemp, burlap fabric, hemp rope, plastering, soil, green,
The plan aimed to maximize the use of the existing greenhouse space. To enhance the space, hemp ropes were wrapped around the existing columns, and burlap fabric was draped over the ceiling frames, serving both as a decorative element and sunshade. For the counter wall, local plastering artisans applied a traditional plaster finish using soil sourced from the region. Outdoor benches were strategically placed, and additional tile benches were designed, serving as a hybrid between architecture and furniture to create a seamless integration of space and seating.
Since this was a public facility renovation project, the design needed to achieve maximum impact within a highly limited budget. To meet this challenge, we chose burlap fabric and hemp rope as primary materials, as they were both affordable and aligned with the facility's theme. During the construction process, we worked closely with the contractor, tackling each technical challenge one by one to ensure successful implementation.
The project started in September 2023 and opened in June 2024 at Nago Okinawa.
Visitors can enjoy affordable coffee and fruit juice made with locally produced agricultural products. Edible plants are placed throughout the space, allowing guests to experience the foodscape concept firsthand. They can relax and spend time while appreciating the scenic integration of food and landscape.
This facility was originally established as a support hub for the sixth industrialization of agricultural producers. However, challenges such as the high barriers for farmers and the lack of unique value creation by local residents and tourists led to a decline in facility users year by year. On the other hand, the area is rich in nature and agricultural products and is located in the Yanbaru region, which has been designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. This makes it a high-potential location. With the goal of connecting farmers and citizens, as well as the agricultural and tourism industries, we established the concept of "FARM & CRAFT."
The spatial design is themed around "Farm & Craft" and "Green," using materials that evoke agriculture—such as wood, earth, and jute—as common elements throughout the facility. These materials were combined with lush indoor and outdoor greenery and earth-toned furniture. Handcrafted decorations were created using burlap fabric and hemp rope, while local soil was used for plastering in collaboration with regional artisans.
