Banlan Hairdressing

Salon for Muyi Interior Design

Banlan adopted the rough and pure concrete in the façade without too much decorations, showing a sense of tension in the space. A touch of blue is clear and open, which is infinitely extended to nothingness, full of artistic vitality. The combination of these two elements create a sense of distance and independence. By reorganizing the space, the designer breaks the traditional conventions of hairdressing salon and injects three major elements: mystery, technology and specialty, which are constantly changing, blending and weaving to meet the needs of customers.

Unique Properties

Located in the busy Taihe Plaza, Banlan adopted the rough and pure concrete in the façade without too much decorations, showing a sense of tension in the space. Production Technology

Black absorbs color and makes colors sharper. Under the black box, IKB appears to be more vivid. It has a mysterious and cold sense of technology that can be explored. It also has infinite grotesque seeds that take you to the sky, the ocean, freedom and nothingness. Staying in it, people are lost in this vast color.

Design Challenge

The lighting and layout of the work area is the key to the design. The indoor lighting layout is set according to the orientation to ensure a working environment without shadow and the simulated natural light ensures the true hair color, bringing a complete and balanced solution for customers and hairdressers. The mirror and steel plate stand from the ground to divide the space into several continuous modules, while avoiding human visual errors caused by the reflection of mirrors.

Project Duration

The project finished in May 2019 in Fuzhou, China.

Operation Flow

The box is an L-shaped corridor with a wash and cut function area on the left and a waiting area on the right. The designer disassembles and visually integrates the original structure. A box is embedded on the right side, which not only completes space construction, but also breaks the original narrow shape, providing more possibilities for the interior functions.

Research

By reorganizing the space, the designer breaks the traditional conventions of hairdressing salon and injects three major elements: mystery, technology and specialty, which are constantly changing, blending and weaving to meet the needs of customers. The project is no longer a single hairdressing salon, but it is more like an art space that spreads aesthetics, promoting the brand to start a new journey of design and experience.

Inspiration

The design is inspired by International Klein Blue (IKB), which is a deep blue hue first mixed by the French artist Yves Klein. IKB's visual impact comes from its heavy reliance on ultramarine, as well as Klein's often thick and textured application of paint to canvas. IKB is applied in Banlan Beauty Salon, which makes it different from the other salons.

Project Overview

Banlan Hairdressing Salon has been a Silver winner in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
