Guided by the idea of sustainable development, we balance the impact of ecology, society and economy to enable the project to achieve the maximum ecological, economic, social and cultural benefits in all aspects in the long run. Starting from local culture, the project introduces ecology, urban aesthetic perception and other ideas to build a cultural town with traditional Miao characteristics, forming a spatial pattern of “one belt, two axes, three streets and 24 major travel timing”.
Miao-flavor town, Miao cultural and creative industry
1. Utilize and transform the terrain properly in line with local conditions; maximize the use of terrain to reduce the investment in earthwork projects and preventive works; 2. Adopt the architectural elements with Miao characteristics, and integrate Miao villages’ characteristics of located near mountains into the layout of architecture. The layout of inner streets is featured by yards, forming three characteristic commercial streets to show the charm of Miao culture; 3. Apply the spatial layout of double first floor, which means that the pedestrian streets of the first floor and the second floor are connected naturally through the layout of architectural traffic elements such as gentle slopes and stairs. The traditional vertical movement between the first floor and the second floor is then transformed into a natural undulating curve to achieve the effect of two first-floors; 4. Build a sink-style courtyard and make the underground garage "rise" to the ground, which would solve the inconvenience caused by the garage being underground; 5. Innovate Miao cultural symbols, combine traditional architecture and modern architecture and include creative elements of different business formats; 6. Utilize the residential stilted buildings with Miao characteristics to create unique guesthouses where people can experience authentic Miao culture. At the same time, it creates a theme hotel with complete functions and of Miao style; 7. Focus on "Miao cultural and creative industry", combine cultural and creative industries with rural areas based on local characteristics to produce a different art impression of folk culture. 8. Make the environment of the town reach the optimum under natural conditions with the application of 3D simulation technology.
Architecture is art and at the same time requires techniques. It is also a paradox incorporating both opportunities and challenges. However, as designers, we need to balance the demands of builders, users, managers and other parties, such as the demands of economic value, social benefit, construction cost, cycle time and artistic value. In the course of designing, innovation in design philosophy and initiative crossover are implemented and major requirements of all parties, industry development, scientific and technological innovation are taken into consideration, so as to find a balance among the stakeholders and precisely create works with both art and techniques integrated.
The project started in June 2018 and finished in October 2019 in Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, Liuzhou. It covers an area of some 210,000 square meters.
This project creates a new landmark of tourism, culture and leisure in Rongshui. The participation of Miao people from surrounding regions into the project makes themselves both residents and workers of the town. They are satisfied materially (employment) and improved spiritually (a deep understanding of their own culture and a broad recognition of the external culture), and are able to give full play to their strengths, create value and maximize their value. Miao people in this region will witness new development, create new cultures, have a new start and embark on a journey in a new era.
Study and analyze design elements such as spatial layout, structure, materials and decorative colors of traditional buildings in the region by referring to literature concerning Miao ethnic group's history and culture. Survey Research: Compare and investigate in detail the typical traditional villages and residential buildings of Miao people to know well the truest current architectural information. Case Study: Study and analyze the typical traditional villages and residential buildings in depth and in detail. Comparative Analysis: Choose cases in different regions and of different types for analyzing after having a full understanding of the characteristics of villages and residential buildings as a whole. We follow the concept of sustainable development to maximize the use of the geography to reduce the investment in earthwork projects and preventive works. We balance the impact of ecology, society and economy to enable the project to achieve the maximum ecological, economic, social and cultural benefits in all aspects in the long run.
The bronze drum, pitched roof framework, cow horn, plant decoration pattern and other elements are extracted from totem, costume and architecture of Miao to form a unique pattern through the interpenetration and mutual integration, which reflects the unique characteristics and profound cultural deposits of Miao.
