Yunhai Shimen, created for West Zhejiang Agro-Tech Industry Park aspires to be the new engine of industrial and economic growth to Qujiang District, Quzhou, a thriving city in Zhejiang, China. The project lends itself as a stage for urban events. It defies the opaque monolithic stereotype of conventional retail podiums by unfolding itself into a series of cascading, interconnected platforms providing for outdoor social activities to compliment the civic programs indoor. The podium platforms, tower sky lobbies, as well as a central gallery nick named "Cloud Deck" together accommodate to public interactions at varying scales.
Mixed-use, tall building, office, retail, public space
Reinforced concrete for main structure; steel moment frame for the central "Cloud Deck" structure; Insulated glass units of low-e laminated glass with hidden ventilator for tower curtain wall; Anodized aluminium, stainless steel, and granite for exterior cladding.
The client aims at creating an unconventional mixed-use development where a large amount of community functions is infused into the retail complex. This not only creates problematic adjacencies but also contradicts with the limitation of space. To fully exploit the civic potential of the project, an important decision was made early on in the design process to maximize utilization of outdoor spaces as an extension of GFA accountable spaces so as to expand the reach of public events while remain complaint with planning/zoning requirements.
Project design started in August 2023 and was awarded in open competition in September 2023. The project is currently in the process of planning approval clearing.
The project encourages public interactions by creating occupiable outdoor platforms spanning across the site at multiple levels. These platforms echo the public programs of their corresponding interior spaces and become extensions thereof. The massing arrangements between the towers, the podium, the central Cloud Deck gallery, and the sunken plaza work synergistically to create an focal point where visitors could gather for concentrated events such as performances and talks. Sky lobbies are inserted at the crowns of each tower to highlight them with public activities. These together create a multi-level public space system to accommodate to events and gatherings of various scales and qualities.
A survey of the project site was made to determine its urban gesture in relation to important contextual elements such as adjacent park/amenity spaces, urban programs, and masterplanning motifs. A research into the city's cultural and geographical contexts was also conducted which highlighted its celebrated natural landscape as an important inspiration of project design.
Drawing inspiration from the mountainous natural landscape in Qujiang, Yunhai Shimen lends itself as an analogue to mountains and clouds with clean, geometric forms of staggering towers and cascading platforms.
