The project has two major functional areas, one of which is the media release area for activities such as the release of new products of the Winter Olympics. The designer makes an art installation combining with the function of the lectern which is mainly made of white frosted acrylic material. The material is cut into 3cm thick slices whose corners are polished. In line with the pure white, blue and white, red and gold and turquoise tone of the Winter Olympics, the back of the acrylic material is embedded with four color changing lights with exterior lights doing horizontal ice scattering, so as to achieve an immersive experience.
The project is a commercial space located in famous Wangfujing Street, a prosperous tourist area with extremely high cost of land. The design must not only ensure the maximum commercial benefits, but also create the atmosphere of the Winter Olympics and deepen understanding of it through the spatial division and the setting of installation art. Therefore, the difficult point of this project is how to achieve the integration of the installation art and the functional media launch area within a limited space.
The project started in Beijing in October 2020 and was completed on February 4, 2021 at Wangfujing Street, Beijing as a way to welcome the first anniversary of the countdown to the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
In the flagship store, people can feel the strong atmosphere of the Winter Olympics while shopping. On the one hand, the implantation of the art installations creates a visual impact full of ice and snow. Through the setting of the lighting effect, part of the light falls on visitors and the light and shadow changes with walking, realizing an immersive experience. On the other hand, the slope in the middle of the staggered staircase is designed as a miniature of the competition areas covered with ice and snow, and the passage up and down deepens the elements of the Winter Olympics. The launch booth, as a non-negligible part, is organically integrated with the overall shape line. The line changes from the wall to the booth to the floor, staggered and smooth, which enriches the ice and snow tone, highlights the image of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and also embodies the Olympic spirit of encouraging forging ahead.
As the flagship store of the Winter Olympics, its differences with other stores were taken into consideration at the beginning of the design. As a commercial space, it is the most powerful link between the Winter Olympics and the general public, so the primary focus of the design is to create the affect valuation of the Winter Olympics. In the first anniversary before the start of the Winter Olympics, people generated a strong sense of mission and honor through the immersive experience of the scene of miles of ice and the light effect here. It also serves as an important promotional window for more and more people to participate in the Winter Olympics.
The design is inspired by the theme of the Games: joyful rendezvous upon pure ice & snow uniting the passion of hundreds of millions for winter sports; inspire the youth with the Olympic spirit. And the installation art is encouraged by the poem of Mao Zedong Snow to the tune of Qin Yuan Chun, a hundred leagues locked in ice, a thousand leagues of whirling snow. The designer highlights the magnificence of the ice and snow with layers of concave and convex texture creating a strong visual impact.
Beijing Winter Olympics Flagship Store Commercial Space Design has been a Silver winner in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design.
