Hotel, Coastal resort, Unity Design Atelier, UDA
During the design process, the architect had to deal with the challenges of, firstly, how to deal with the relationship between the high-density luxury resort hotel and the surrounding environment, especially the nearby existing fishing village; Secondly, how to maximize the value of a hotel and to strike a balance between the interests of the developer and general public. Thirdly, how to maximize the view of the surrounding landscape and ensure that all guest rooms and communal facilities would be provided with ocean views.
LOCATION: Huizhou, China DURATION: 2014-2019
The key circulation axis flows from the main site entrance of the hotel into a pedestrian plaza. From here, it leads into the entrance plaza and then all the way to the beach, with space along the axis varies in volume and provide a range of rich sensory experience. Between the three towers lie a giant size translucent canopy that connects the semi open plaza space at the podium level afforded a strong ritualistic sense of entering the hotel, commonly found in a grandiose hotel. A large semi-transparent canopy allows the guests from all towers to connect to public amenities, such as swimming pool, restaurants and bar located on different levels and then all the way to the beach. With open building interface, pedestrian-friendly landscape design and small rooftop villas, the intention is to craft a pleasant entrance plazas and beach plaza that guests will enjoy during their stay. The multi-level spatial sequence from public to private provides visitors with an open public space, but also space exclusively for hotel guests, striking a good balance between public interest and private interest.
The building design is inspired by the crescent-shaped beaches on both sides of the site, a natural feature that is attractive to the site. In general, the building forms are smooth and wavy, symbolising water flowing with energy, and the surging of waves. The facades of the three high-rise buildings are reminiscent of a series of waves hitting the shore, which gradually formed an abstract crescent shape – a metaphor of double crescent moons and ocean waves. The facade design of the low-rise building facing the beach to the west was inspired by the texture of rock-like deposits and the cracks that are eroded by seawater. These rocks are layered with different colours and materials, and are carved by nature. The façade is made with stone and metal of different textures and colours with varying widths, which became a layered rock-like facade effect. Through scattering, they form a rich occlusal relationship. The shape of the building and the facade texture are all derived from the beach and the ocean, aiming to arouse people's imagination and imagination of the ocean.
The site is situated in Shuangyue Bay Southern China, where natural landscape with two crescent-moon-like beaches and beautiful sea view are found. Contradict to the organic growth pattern of a fishing village nearby, the simple form and tall volume has made the hotel an eye-catching identity around the area. Small building volumes are placed at the main pedestrian entrance fronting the beach to replicate the spatial scale of fishing village and to create a pedestrian friendly environment.
