Japanese food, restaurant, Japanese food, nature, cultural experience
The overall interior decoration emphasizes the transition between spaces with impressive details, thus creating a refined dining atmosphere. The wooden structure, tables and chairs are the bright tones in this space, giving it a natural sense. The walls, ceiling, and floors are treated in a hidden manner, and the elevated kitchen renders the cooking process visible from any corner.
The design breaks away from the traditional decoration of Japanese restaurants and makes a sharp contrast between delicacy and roughness, echoing the tatami room and izakaya. The transition between spaces are fully leveraged to present cuisine and the Japanese culinary culture, bringing warmer dining experience to diners.
The project design began in August 2021, and was completed in November, 2021. In the same month the construction was also kicked off and in January 2022, the building work came to an end. The restaurant was officially opened in March 2022.
The restaurant has its eastern entrance connect to the mall and the western face the street. The two are designed in different styles. The western one has a grille-like façade with thatched landscape and soft light, allowing diners to see clearly from the outside and work up their appetite. The other entrance is on the pre-cast concrete block face sitting on the busy night-time shopping street interspersed with accent lighting and ground lighting. A narrow, dark, landscaped walkway leads to the restaurant, which resembles walking through a downtown area via a quiet passage and then into to the izakaya.
The stability and safety of the wooden structure must be considered. Since many construction techniques and detail treatment were used for the first time, designers had carried out multiple times of negotiation and communications with suppliers and the construction contractor.
We hope to leverage the unique design language to show the brand richness of Kuromon Ichiban, which is not only an izakaya where you can stay and drink, but also serves robatayaki and you can enjoy the night food culture of Japan.
