Hotel for UAD
Inspired by an ancient verse that portrays the picturesque scenery of Shaoxing, the project takes "green mountain and clear water" as design concept. Instead of simply combining or simulating traditional symbols in Shaoxing, it draws on traditional Chinese landscaping and literary techniques such as "borrowing", "metaphorizing" and "analogy", to respond to local historical context and environment through abstract expressions. By incorporating local features and scenery of nearby Fushan Mountain, the project presents a picturesque, poetic landscape scene that echoes local mountains and water.

As mountain-facing landscapes are integrated and old and new building volumes are unified, Shaoxing Hotel achieves the transition from a generous welcoming atmosphere to the elegant and tranquil one. Landscapes inside the hotel unfold around Qingbai Courtyard, Ningcui Courtyard and Tingyu Courtyard, which express the natural themes of mountain, water, and rain, respectively.
Shaoxing Hotel, Jiangnan-style, UAD, landscape design, traditional charm
Inspired by the painting the Hills of Kuaiji, the grand landscapes composed of water, stones and bonsai in Qingbai Courtyard appear like a quaint, vivid three-dimensional scroll painting in front of the hotel lobby. Through modern techniques, Tingyu Courtyard reveals traditional charm. On rainy days, the drops on eaves fall into waterscape, while stacked stones are also gradually sunken. It's romantic to listen to the rain and look up at distant mountains while sitting in front of the courtyard.
The time frame from schematic design to completion was limited within seven months. Within a tight schedule, the design team needed to handle a lot of tasks while fulfilling high requirements as well. The biggest challenge was how to connect the hotel with the local culture, how to create a dialogue with the site environment, and how to make upgrades based on the hotel's original style. These were also key points of the landscape design.
PROJECT DURATION: 2018.04.20-2018.10.31 Location:Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China
Pine bonsai at the entrance square of multi-functional hall echoes three mountains of the city, featuring the magnificent ambience of thousand-seat banquet room. Stones, pine trees and bamboos become framed views for VIP reception room. Green waterscape and plants in the courtyard echo the distant lush green mountain. Reserved luxuriant trees in the courtyard integrate with the lushly green mountain in the distance, full of poetry.
Based on the nearby scenic Fushan Mountain Garden and traditional Chinese landscaping techniques such as "borrowing", "metaphorizing" and "analogy", the project creates a dialogue with mountain and water. Through drawing on local unique features, the design creates a distinctive landscape setting for Shaoxing Hotel, portraying a picture with lush trees, elegant pines and intoxicating seasonal sceneries. The project is highly recognized by the client, citizens, experts and the authority.
Shaoxing Hotel is located at the foot of Fushan Mountain in Shaoxing, an ancient city with a profound history. Based on this context, the landscape design aims to connect with the local culture, dialogue with the site environment, and make improvement based on the original style of the hotel. The landscape design takes the concept of "green mountain and clear water" to create a beautiful setting with luxuriant trees, elegant pines and intoxicating seasonal sceneries for the hotel.
