Residence for SophySoulDesign
This project involved the renovation of an old single-story residence, with an indoor area of 108m2. To meet the needs of the single owner, the three original rooms were transformed into two, while cleverly reducing the unused corridor and expanding the public area. Additionally, the lounge near the window was partially receded using varying flooring materials, iron and glass folding doors to clearly delineate the spaces.

This project is the renovation of an old single-story residence, indoor area about 108m2. In response to the user demands based mainly on the single owner, the original three rooms were altered into two rooms, ingeniously shortening the unused corridor while also enlarging the usage range for the public domain. Secondly, the area of the lounge near the window retreated slightly in collaboration with different flooring materials, as well as iron and glass folding doors to define the regions.

The use of different materials and techniques is a vital loop in enhancing the space, including the presentation of facet texture and patterns via the construction process, such as the main wall in the lounge and the end view wall in the dining area completed using a trowel; or the complementation of different materials to bring out the lasting sentiment of the times, such as the harmonious conversation between the carpet-like herringbone flooring and the peripheral matte tiles.
The brownish-red longitudinal kitchen island comes with functional features, such as a sink and a water dispenser, introducing enormous convenience to the public domain; however, the flooring was raised in the construction process to avoid excessively long pipelines and the location of the island was also meticulously calculated beforehand, while the back of the island also applied height differences to the structure in order to create a practical display shelf and a complete end view wall.
The project finished in Jun. 2020 in Taipei City, Taiwan.
The spacious foyer offers a magnificent flow of lights and shadows upon entrance, giving one the welcoming home sense of belonging and relaxation. Based on the owner’s living habits, and the need for occasional gatherings and floriculture classes, the public domain has adopted an open settlement planning, including the lounge, the sunbathing flower garden, the dining room and the kitchen with a central island, not only sharing multiple depths of fields but also supporting each other mutually in the aspect of functions. Thereby creating a diversification of interactive fun. Between the dining room and the multi-functional room in the back is a partition wall, which is integrated with a hollowed display shelf on the left-side of the wall, thereby extending the field of vision, while the use of glass folding doors for the multi-functional room facing into the corridor also allows the shortened corridor to be incorporated as a part of the open-space domain.
To those with a passion for life and unique insights into the looks of a residence, the spatial decoration should not be restricted to merely beautifying the appearances, as all materials and techniques can only be the media; therefore, this project has avoided complicated stacking for the ceiling, the flooring and the walls. Instead, it placed the focus on depicting the user’s personality and the implementation of emotions.
The elegant and romantic owner with a nostalgic personality prefers vintage objects, as well as the characteristics of passion for cooking, specialization in floriculture and enjoyment of occasional social gatherings, which have all given the design team rich inspirations during the spatial designing process. For instance, the gray-toned texture extending from the walls to the floor by the entrance foyer, as well as the owner’s private collection of vintage furniture.
