Spiritual Casa

Residence for DHouse Interior Design Co.,Ltd.

This four-story home, nestled in the countryside of Yilan, Taiwan, belongs to a couple from Spain and Taiwan. The design blends Chinese and Spanish traditions, reflecting a deep love for both the native land and heritage. A triangular roof adorned with Spanish tiles, along with screens and Chinese totems, create a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. The space is enhanced with natural tones that invite inclusivity, where materials, textures, and colors work together to evoke memories and forge a connection between people, their roots, and the land.

Unique Properties

To blend Chinese and Western cultures, the design incorporates Spain's typical triangular wooden beams, a ceiling, an island bar, and Spanish tile accents. Chinese elements like screens, flowering crabapple, and antique coin motifs subtly highlight traditional Asian customs. Hand-woven rattan furniture, crafted by local artisans using mortise and tenon joints, showcases exquisite local craftsmanship.

Production Technology

The totem on the tiles specially chooses the ancient Chinese coin pattern to imply the lucky meaning of opening the door and seeing money. The kitchen, with its square middle island, Spanish tiles and triangular roof, highlights the Spanish design elements and spirit, satisfying the homeowner's feeling of homesickness. The natural hollow rattan has the effect of ventilation and moisture drainage, and also echoes with the crabapple flower glass and lamp string on the curved wall to reproduce the retro charm of Taiwan in the 1960s.

Design Challenge

Because the first floor was blocked by T girder, beam and stairs, the horizontal space is cut, and once the mechanical and electrical equipment is hidden in the ceiling, the vertical space is also easy to become compressed. Therefore, in accordance with the existing beam position, the triangular roof is arranged in the kitchen ceiling to raise the view and restore the Spanish architectural structure. The living room uses the Chinese circular arc element to create the ceiling, outlining a soft spatial line, but also taking into account the needs of air conditioning. As for the entryway, the space is defined by a square ceiling.

Project Duration

The project started in January 2023 and finished in April 2023 in Taiwan.

Operation Flow

To make the sight and moving line smoother, the entryway uses glass tiles and low cabinets to divide the kitchen and living room, maintaining the sense of openness of the space. In the kitchen, the middle island is placed in the center, to form the hollow-square moving line, to walk more smoothly. As for the master bedroom, the same design is continued, with the chest of drawers in the center and the aisle on two sides, which is convenient to shuttle back and forth between the sleeping and storage areas without hindrance. The cabinet also deliberately uses an even table top, which can block the sight of the messy desktop and maintain a simple and neat space.

Research

How to delicately integrate Eastern and Western elements has become an important key to the space. Therefore, the grey and milk-tea earth colors are used to establish a neutral spatial tone, and then restoring the Spanish architectural structure, the local traditional tiles and bright colors remind of the Spanish country house. While the Chinese elements are cleverly hidden in the ceiling and screen totem, with rattan plaited articles and embossed glass, showing the Chinese retro feelings.

Inspiration

The four-story house in the countryside of Yilan, Taiwan, owned by a Spanish and Taiwanese couple. The overall spatial structure and intricate details pay homage to Chinese and Spanish traditions, based on a deep affection for the native land. The triangular roof, Spanish tiles, screen and Chinese totem are arranged to integrate Eastern and Western cultures, attempting to trigger memories through material texture, touch and color, and connect the feelings of people and land, people and hometown.
