Public Space for YU YA CHING INTERIOR DESIGN
A lobby space inspirited through a marriage of musical imagery layered with warm wood, granite, stone and brass. Undulating flowing lines and shifting natural light highlight the bespoke entry doors and floor to ceiling window and garden access. The beautiful stone floors and chiseled surfaces of the rusty speckled granite walls suggest substantial, solid construction yet a timeless beauty. The multiplicity of materials flows between transparency and privacy, between seeing and being seen, yet feels like home.

This lobby project features 10ft floor to ceiling double doors of asymmetrical panels of woven brass, wood-grained copper sheeting, mirrors and clear glass. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall features vertical iron slats of varying length with an eye-level open line of sight into an urban garden. Dark teak woods offset light and dark grey marble floors and walls with a large, solid wood-beam seating area and an undulating, wave-like dark wooden ceiling with a large tubular brass pipe pendant light.

Custom 10ft entryway doors woven of brass, wood-grained copper sheeting, tawny mirror and clear glass. The interior features subdued materials such as natural wood, chiseled granite, marble, metals, and teak veneers. A floor-to-ceiling window with wood-grained wrought-iron planks of varying heights obscures the cityscape, creating a garden line of sight. A warm, curving wooden ceiling cured and formed on-site, draws the eye upward to a central brass tube pendant light resembling organ pipes.
As the curved wood ceiling needed to be formed onsite, one of the most challenging aspect of this project was using traditional methods of curving the pieces used to form the ceiling. Bending the wood onsite was necessary as the intricacy of the design demanded it. In the same way, the heavy front doors were also constructed onsite due to the size.
This project finished in 2017 in Taipei Taiwan.
From the heft of the hand-crafted double entry doors to the warmth of the curved ceiling, muted earth tones, stone and wooden surfaces reflecting natural light, the lobby welcomes resident and visitors with subdued grandeur. The functional elements of the space bracket a tasteful seating area with enticing garden views beyond.
Choice of materials was made based on the client’s desire for elements that reflect a time of sturdy, long-lasting construction: solid wood, brass and bronze, rough chiseled granite, marble. Research into traditional building materials and structures informed the choices, while the desire for a reflection of a musical theme throughout informed the use of tubular brass pendant lighting and other flowing lines.
Inspirited by the Chinese -Tang, this symmetrical square space creates an acoustic echo when standing in the center. Music and the flowing lines and waves of sound are represented in the undulating wave-like ceiling and solid hard wood bench and counter. Echoes of a piano keyboard are visually mimicked through the chiaroscuro effect of intermittent black iron slats of the garden-view window, while dark, heavy woods and light stone finishes underscore the calm of the space in a bustling city.
