Experimental School for GHD Architectural Design Co., Ltd.
The architects recalled their time back at school, and reflected on what's the impact of educational buildings on students at different stages. The answer is not fixed. For colleges, the buildings may need to pay attention to students' freedom and self-discipline, while high-school architecture may focus more on pressure relief for teenagers. And for this 9 year school, GHD team emphasizes that the buildings need to help shape and protect students' fundamental values. GHD has been actively exploring educational building typology and trying to inject new thoughts into design.

With a GFA of 24,462sqm, the project is located in Jiyang District, Jinan. The site adjoins a landscape park and overlooks Yellow River, making it perfect for building a campus. The buildings are configured with 1 main axis and 2 auxiliary axes. The former includes two courtyards, while the later accommodates various functional zones. Many shared communication spaces, facilities and environments are designed. Interiors spaces are pleasant, systematic and flexible, creating an academic atmosphere.
Educational buildings, primary & middle school, cultural education, cultural environment, cultural protection
The project emphasizes sustainability. It uses energy-saving and non-polluting materials, thermal-insulation modified ceramsite mortar for external walls, heat-insulation profiles, and double-layer insulated glass for absorbing noise. According to the project's traits, the buildings use light-colored coating that features stone-like textures as a main material, which is complemented by a few real stones, revealing delicacy in simplicity and creating calmness and affinity unique to the campus.
To be in line with the law of physical & mental development of children, the buildings should focus more on cultivating their cultural hobbies and characters, and let traditional culture exert a subtle influence on them. The greatest challenge is how to discard the misunderstandings of some previous educational buildings and create a campus environment that fits into children's living and learning activities, helps improve their cognitive development and meet their demands at different stages.
Started in 2019 and finished in December 2021 Location:Jiyang District, Jinan, Shandong Province, China
The school buildings help foster students' hobbies and characters through the functionality and cultural atmosphere, and also act as an "umbrella" that protects students from the "noise" from the outside world. Taking these attributes into account, the master planning creates a micro campus environment consisting of interior and outdoor spaces, to provide students with a safe living environment and create an ambience of classical Chinese academies to let them be immersed in Chinese culture.
Under the protection of external spaces and courtyard-style layout, the freedom and fluidity of internal courtyards and activity spaces are ensured. The courtyard-style pattern harmonizes with the built landscape of the old urban quarter where the school is situated. Meanwhile, to avoid a too solemn building image, the design team adopts Republican-era architectural style, which is compatible with the old urban quarter and its modernization while also producing a traditional cultural atmosphere.
The project is a 9-year school which supports compulsory education and implements the teaching ideas and student-related concepts of quality-oriented education in the new era. The educational buildings need to block the "noise" of the outside world, ensure safety of the campus and create a pleasant, systematic and quality cognitive environment, to enhance students' capabilities in abstract and systematic thinking and initially foster their aesthetic awareness and cultural outlook.
