Interior Design for SAMMI DESIGN
The old building should undergo extensive renovations, beginning with foundation works, pipeline renewal, updating exterior doors and windows, and renovating staircases. Furthermore, the installation of additional elevators will optimize mobility for the elderly, as well as ensuring the quality and longevity of the residence is greatly improved. In addition, a clever solution to the problem of insufficient lighting within the building can be addressed by introducing natural light through an atrium.

The building is old, so it should be started with foundation works, pipeline renewal, exterior doors and windows update and renovation of staircases and installation of additional elevators. In this way, the quality and lifespan of the residence will be greatly enhanced and the convenience of mobility for the elderly will be optimized. At the same time, natural light can come through the atrium, which cleverly solves the hidden problem of poor lighting inside the long house.

The invisible foundation work in this case is actually very tedious. These steps include leveling out the ground, replacing exterior doors and windows, redoing the waterproofing of the external walls on both sides of the third and fourth floor, strictly enforcing thermal and acoustic insulation in the multi-purpose room on the top floor and completely replacing old piping. The selection of materials is more careful. The selection of high quality eco-friendly materials, such as the indoor humidity-regulating and dust-free clay, heat-insulating wood wool cement board, high-quality system board and PVC floor tiles to beautify the ceiling, floors and walls, lay a good foundation for an all-age modern house.
The central atrium of the enlarged area is a highlight of the project. The addition of an elevator in the back half of the space required careful assessment of the structural load bearing and reinforcement steps, which were not to be taken lightly. The former effectively shortens the long corridor and creates an inner garden with greenery, while also providing light to the dark bathroom at the rear through a partial glass wall. The latter creates user-friendly, safe, comfortable and fast movement paths, linking vertical movement lines and creating value-added residences.
The project finished in Oct. 2021 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
The original long house design is fragmented and mostly deformed. By reconfiguring the layout and lines to meet the needs of the users, both the view and the actual sense of space will no longer be oppressive. For example, the first half of the lower floor is planned to be open to the public, while the second half is divided into bedrooms, bathrooms and stairwells where privacy is important. The front half of the upper floor is arranged with a terrace garden and the back half is also reserved for the bedroom and multi-functional recreation room, thus creating a visual flow in both parallel and vertical directions and a sense of airy and spacious space.
Although the multi-functional lounge is not inherently square in shape, the harmonious ratio color of gray and white and the lively contrast of materials still succeed in creating a spacious and bright space feeling. In particular, the ceilings and walls are made of natural wood wool cement board to block the heat from sunlight and the scratch-resistant gray PVC tiles create a leisure and activity area where family members can play and have zero distance between people and space.
The original design was narrow and long, which was not conducive to planning. However, by enlarging the original patio in the middle section with a three-way glass door that allows free access to the staff, the building will be able to provide a more comfortable environment. The abundant natural light from the upper floor goes through to the lower floor from the safety grille, which also eliminates the darkness and seclusion of the corridor and the view is particularly attractive.
