Apartment for Ching Jhih Interior Design
This project reinterprets North American neoclassical aesthetics within a contemporary Asian residence, balancing proportion, materiality, and cultural context. A refined 1 to 4 paneling system extends seamlessly into built in storage, while moisture resistant materials suit the climate of Taiwan. This design stands out for its precise translation of North American neoclassical elements into a contemporary Asian living context. Balancing aesthetics with local sensibilities, it embraces the humid climate of Taiwan through material choices, respects the perspective of feng shui and carefully considers daily behavior, crafting a home where beauty, function, and cultural comfort truly align.

This design was realized through precise on site measurement and meticulous proportion control. A 1 to 4 paneling system was custom built with moisture resistant foam boards, ideal for the climate of Taiwan. KD eco friendly PP boards ensure durability and low emissions. Every material and joint was carefully selected to balance aesthetics and longevity, while iterative modeling and close client collaboration shaped the design into a refined, livable space.
The greatest challenge was translating North American neoclassical language into a compact Asian home without losing balance. Internally, it required reinterpreting historical aesthetics within modern daily life. Externally, humid climate, fire codes, and material of Taiwan limits demanded careful selections. Navigating between emotional memory, cultural beliefs, and technical constraints shaped a design both refined and deeply personal.
The apartment design began in August 2023 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and was completed in January 2024.
The design invites users into a gentle flow, where each step reveals thoughtful layers. Entering through a dark toned foyer, the retractable door glides smoothly shielding the kitchen while preserving openness. Full height built in storage quietly hides clutter and groceries, protecting the minimalist elegance of the space. Every interaction balances privacy, comfort, and a sense of belonging, carrying traces of distant memories from a life once lived beyond the sea.
The research explored spatial behavior and cultural memory, aiming to balance neoclassical beauty with daily function. Through interviews, site studies, and iterative modeling, data from client stories and environmental analysis guided the design. Reconstructing memories into proportions and materials, the process deepened cultural sensitivity. The result shapes emotional connections, influencing residential design and living experiences.
Inspired by fond memories of the client living in Canada, the design reimagines North American neoclassical charm through a modern, heartfelt lens. It reflects a longing for familiar proportions, comforting textures, and the quiet elegance of home. Guided by emotional connection and the desire to create a warm, enduring living space, the project celebrates both cultural heritage and everyday rituals.
